Meta Tags

What are meta tags?

A meta tag is an element of metadata, or data within data.  Basically, it is the part of the code used by web developers that defines pertinent information about your website?

Why are meta tags important?

Meta tags aren’t visible to people viewing a website, but they are important in helping some search engines find your site.

However, they are not as important as they were a few years ago.  Many unethical web programmers discovered that misusing meta tags could artificially boost site traffic.  This led to several search engines placing less emphasis on meta tags when determining a site’s ranking.

Now, meta tags alone will not generate a huge increase in site traffic, but they should not be overlooked.  A website dedicated to deep-sea fishing would be remiss to not include deep-sea fishing in their meta tag.
